Engines with lower fuel consumption and emissions

The engines of the new generation work more efficiently than ever before.
The 40 kW cdi turbodiesel is the CO2 champion with emissions of just 86 g/km. The optimised petrol engines also set new records with regard to CO2 emissions. Thanks to detailed work on the engine control unit and exhaust system both the 45 kW mhd and the 52 kW mhd consume 4.2 litres of petrol per 100 km (combined figure) – corresponding to CO2 emissions of 97 g/km (combined figure). The 62 kW version consumes 4.9 litres of fuel over 100 km (corresponding to CO2 emissions of 114 g/km). The power output of the BRABUS version has been increased from 72 kW to 75 kW. Despite this, at 119 g CO2 per 100 kilometres (combined figure) even the more powerful engine remains below the 120 gram threshold.

New BRABUS features

The most striking change for the BRABUS und BRABUS Xclusive lines is the new rim design for the Monoblock VII alloy wheels. The BRABUS double-pipe rear muffler has also been modified.The BRABUS interior design, too, has been modified in line with the new smart fortwo interior design. The instrument cluster now also features the new dial. The cruise control function is available as a new option.

Lotus will honor Roger Becker, former Director of Vehicle Engineering, for his 44 years of service and engineering guidance over the course, with a limited edition special series of Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige sportscars. The Elise SC RGB Special Edition has a supercharged 217 hp (220 ps) 1.8 litre engine which blesses it with a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds (0-100kmh in 4.6 seconds). The Lotus Exige S RGB Special Edition uses the range topping 257 (260 ps) supercharged and intercooled 1.8 litre engine which endows it with a 0-60 mph in around 4 seconds and a phenomenal aerodynamic downforce figure of 92.5 lbs (42 kg) at 100 mph (160 kmh).

In celebration of his now legendary input over the years, Roger Becker (RGB) who retired in January following 44 years of service, will have a series of Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige sports cars in bespoke RGB Special Edition specification produced and set for release from September 2010.The Elise SC and Exige S RGB Special Editions will both be specified to a high level with Sports and Touring packs as standard. At the end of 2010, production of the European versions of the Elise R and SC and the Exige S and Cup 260, which use the 1.8 litre 2ZZ VVTL-i engines supplied by Toyota, will finish due to changes in legislation and the introduction of “Euro 5” Type Approval which does not apply to these cars. Production of the Elise R and SC and the Exige S and Cup 260 will, however, continue for all other markets.

Mazda unveiled a special 2,000 unit limited edition MX-5 EU Edition to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the MX-5. The special edition will be available in three colors - True Red, Aurora Blue or Crystal White Pearl with special chrome facia and features 1.8 litre 93kW/126 PS petrol engine with 167 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm while consuming only 7 litres per 100 km (33 mpg).

Acceleration from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds

When it comes to dynamics, the electrically-powered SLS AMG makes a statement: the gull-wing model accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds - which almost puts it on the same high level as the SLS AMG with 6.3-liter V8 engine developing 563 hp (0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds).

High-voltage lithium-ion battery provides 400 v and 40 Ah

The SLS AMG E-CELL drive incorporates a liquid-cooled high-voltage lithium-ion battery featuring a modular design with an energy content of 48 kWh and a capacity of 40 Ah. The maximum electric load potential of the battery, which consists of 324 lithium-ion polymer cells, is 480 kW, which is an absolute best figure in the automotive sector. Another technical feature of this considerable performance is the intelligent parallel circuit of the individual battery modules - this also helps to maximize the safety, reliability and service life of the battery. High-performance electronic control as well as effective cooling of all components

A high-performance electronic control system converts the direct current from the high-voltage battery into three-phase alternating current which is required for the synchronous motors and regulates the energy flow for all operating conditions. Two low-temperature cooling circuits ensure that the four electric motors and the power electronics are maintained at an even operating temperature. A separate low-temperature circuit is responsible for cooling the high-voltage lithium-ion battery. In low external temperatures, the battery is quickly brought up to operating temperature with the aid of an electric heating element. This helps to preserve the overall service life of the battery. On 4th July 2010, Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sports car has set a new landspeed worldrecord of 434.211 kmph (268mph). The Super Sport is an enhancement to the 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4 launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in bends and excellent stability when braking and accelerating.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport will appear for the first time in public in California at the Pebble Beach Concours weekend in mid-August and will be featured at The Quail, Monterey Historic Races at Laguna Seca and on the concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.Every detail of this car, and not just its use of advanced motorsport technology, harks back to the pioneering spirit of company founder Ettore Bugatti. This brilliant designer came from a family of artists, and his philosophy was always to combine mechanical perfection and exterior beauty. This ethos remains alive and well at the company, and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is wholly unmistakeable, with every external modification serving to coax greater performance from the car.

The Super Sport’s flat, elongated silhouette is immediately recognisable. The 16-cylinder engine gets its air from two NACA ducts integrated into the roof, rather than from scoops above the engine.The front air intakes have been expanded and reshaped, with the lower one extending elegantly around the sides to the wheel arch. The revised back looks sportier due to the double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system.

Bugatti has a tradition of making super-sport versions of successful models, usually with racing chassis and supercharged engines. These cars were considered as true racing machines for diehard Bugatti devotees. The most successful were the type 55 and type 57S; only around forty of each were built.

Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. has sold 260 Veyrons and 35 Grand Sports by now, of which 249 Veyrons and 22 Grand Sports had been delivered. The Super Sport will begin production this autumn at Molsheim along with the Veyron and the Grand Sport. The first five cars – known as the 3 Bugatti World Record Edition – are in a special black exposed carbon and orange finish and have already been sold.

Renault has provided a first glimpse of its latest concept car, DeZir, ahead of this year's Paris Motor Show. DeZir stands out as an illustration of the brand's commitment to more emotional styling.

DeZir’s sensuous lines and bright red finish express passion. Powered by an electric motor, DeZir is proof that electric vehicles and a love of cars are by no means incompatible.

The DeZir project is the first to have been led by Laurens van den Acker and marks the start of a sequence of concept cars that will provide an insight into Renault Design's new vision for the future. It also lays the foundations for the styling cues of Renault's forthcoming vehicles.

The public will get its first opportunity to see DeZir at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

DEZIR: THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF RENAULT DESIGN'S NEW VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Under the leadership of Laurens van den Acker, Renault's Design Department has taken its inspiration from the brand's new signature 'Drive the Change' and explores Renault's styling roots to express the company's powerful human dimension via a new strategy founded on the notion of the 'life cycle'. This vision also builds on the bonds that are gradually forged between the brand and its customers at watershed moments of their lives, such as when they fall inlove, begin to explore the world, start a family, begin work, take time out to play and gain wisdom.

This approach coincides with the introduction of a new Renault design language that takes its inspiration from the three keywords which communicate the brand's vision, namely 'simple', 'sensuous' and 'warm'.

In keeping with this strategy, Renault's concept cars will progressively express this vision, paving the way for a product plan based on a range of rational, user-friendly cars.

To implement this, Renault Design has revised its methodology, and a single team of designers will now be responsible for each new concept car and for the subsequent production model it previews.

AN ELECTRIC BEAUTY

DeZir is powered by an electric motor mounted in a mid-rear position to optimise weight distribution over the front and rear wheels. The vertically-mounted 24kWh lithium-ion battery is located behind the benchseat and provides the car with a range of 100 miles.

Batterycooling is ensured not only by the air channelled from the front to the back of the car, but also – and above all – by the flow of air that enters through the lateral scoops concealed behind the aluminium panels on either side of the body.

The basic motor is the same as the unit used for Renault's production electric cars, although an evolution has enabled its power and torque to be uprated to 110kW (150ch) and 226Nm respectively.

Three battery-charging methods can be employed:

a standard charge using a conventional household plug (fully charges the battery in eight hours)
a fast charge using a 400V three-phase current (charges the battery to 80 per cent of its capacity in 20 minutes)
a fast battery exchange thanks to Renault's Quick Drop technology

In order to optimise range and dynamic performance, Renault Design's technical teams have kept DeZir’s weight to a minimum: its body is made from Kevlar, while its tubular steel frame is similar to that employed for the Mégane Trophy race car.

DeZir’s suspension also shares certain features with that of Mégane Trophy – including a double wishbone arrangement – to deliver a particularly high standard of handling precision.

DeZir’s aerodynamics have been carefully honed, too, thanks to full underbody fairing and a rear diffuser. The result of this work is a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25, as well as outstanding acceleration, with DeZir capable of accelerating from rest to 62mph in just five seconds.

DeZir’s energy efficiency package also includes the recovery of deceleration energy. The technology it employs is based on the same principles as the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) seen in Formula 1. When the car decelerates, kinetic energy is recovered and stored in the battery. In the case of DeZir, this energy can then be employed by the driver to provide a temporary power boost at the moment he or she chooses, using a button located on the steering wheel.

Driving pleasure is further enhanced by the design of the driver interface. The dashboard visually mirrors the sensations felt at the wheel by means of a graphic display of data received from the accelerometer and speed sensors.

The central touchscreen display incorporates a smart navigation system that synchronises journey information with the driver's diary in order to optimise task management and itineraries. Software incorporated in the dashboard provides drivers with a real-time indication of their energy management ability via a fun interface that uses video-game style graphics.

RZ Ultima Concept 2010 - Racer X Design

The RZ Ultima concept is intended for those who want all the performance that the GTRRacer X Design offers but with a more refined look. Even if the car is still in design phase, believes it has the potential to be the ultimate supercar.

The Ultima GTR has always been on top of the food chain in terms of performance. The RZ Ultima is a concept that can use the same rolling chassis, but replaces the bodywork in favor of a more modern and aggressive look designed by the Racer X Design team.

Sub 10 seconds runs up the strip, quickest acceleration from 0 to 100 mph, quickest deceleration from 100mph to 0. We all know the Ultima GTR. Performance that makes any production car trail behind where it counts: Around a track!

The RZ Ultima concept is intended for those who want all the performance that the GTR offers but with a more refined look. Even if this is still in design phase, we believe it has the potential to be the ultimate supercar.

Based on top of the GTR existing chassis, the styling was designed to leave the chassis and running gear untouched. This is what Racer X Design thinks a supercar should be. Extremely quick, stylish, and unique. The RZ Ultima promises all these qualities and more.

BMW Art Car at 24 Hour Le Mans

BMW Art Car was present earlier this month in Paris and has plans to participate at the 24 Hours Le Mans Race.

Le Mans. On June 12 at three in the afternoon the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans will officially begin. A highlight will surely be the participation of the Jeff Koons’ 17th BMW Art Car which has been presented in Paris just a week before. In April 2010, BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen announced the driver line-up for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Andy Priaulx (GB), Dirk Müller (DE) and Dirk Werner (DE) will race the BMW Art Car #79. Jörg Müller (DE), Augusto Farfus (BR), Uwe Alzen (DE) will drive the BMW Le Mans car #78.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest endurance race in all of sports car racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, Sarthe, France. Commonly known as the Grand Prix of Endurance, it is organized by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and runs on a circuit containing closed public roads. The race is designed not only to test a car and driver’s ability to be quick, but also to last over a 24-hour period.

The BMW M3 GT2

Derived from the BMW M3 high-performance sports car, the BMW M3 GT2 boasts a 4.0-liter V8 engine with a maximum output of 500 bhp, an upgraded chassis, racing-caliber brakes, and extensive use of lightweight materials. Able to reach 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, the BMW M3 GT2 is rapidly emerging as a real first year contender at this year’s event.

For the Comeback at 24 Le Mans BMW Motorsport is supported by numerous successful partners. This is why the BMW M3 GT2 will be labeled with the logos of Castrol, Crowne Plaza, Dunlop, Randstad, Sympatex, LuK, H&R, BBS and NGK for the race on the “Circuit de la Sarthe”.

The Design Process

As part of his creative process, the artist collected images of race cars, related graphics, vibrant colors, speed and explosions. The resulting artwork of bright colors conceived by Koons is evocative of power, motion and bursting energy. Its silver interior along with the powerful exterior design, the Art Car will impart a dynamic appearance even when it’s standing still.

The challenge to create the BMW Art Car had to do with using a light material and a design that would not interfere with the racecar's aerodynamics and weight. Timing was also an issue, as there was only a two month window between the first design sketches and the Paris world premiere. This is why digital print on car wrapping vinyl was used covered by a double clear-coating to bring out the color. To apply hundreds of dynamic lines of Koons' design onto the car, CAD designs were translated from 3D into 2D for the printing process and then painstakingly applied to the entire car as well as onto individual spare parts. Koons design incorporates many bright contrasting colors to communicate the aesthetics of power. The concept design was transformed into hard eged lines of color. Graphics of debris were added to the rear sides and back of the car to simulate the power of the car. Furthermore, two graphic rings on the rear of the car represent supersonic acceleration.

This is the nature of the new Husqvarna CR and SM 50, the “mini” that have everything you need to make your debut as a real rider.Liquid cooled two stroke engines, disc brakes, adjustable suspensions, steel chassis with the same shape as the Husqvarna racing bike, single cylinder engine with dual clutch transmission depending on the driver's expertise and competitiveness.The line is the same as the Husqvarna dirt bike and Supermotard; with the classic white/red colours for the CR version and white for the SM one, just like the bike that Antoine Meo rides in the Enduro world championship and Adrien Chareyre rides in Supermoto.

The framework is in CrMo steel tubes with rectangular, circular and oval section; the most visible section as it connects the upper beam to the hub.The rear frame is detachable.

AC Schnitzer HP2 Concept Bike with ROR weight of 190kg, 111 HP power @ 7200 RPM and 120 Nm of torque @ 5550 rpm is the end result of joint venture!Immediately after the launch of the HP2 Enduro by BMW, it was clear that this machine presented a new challenge to the AC Schnitzer engineers. The challenge was to make a very special Superbike out of the HP2. With the collaboration of our two partners WP Suspension and Dunlop however we've achieved success..

The details:

For fast acceleration on the road and track, safe braking is essential - so the second front brake was an important part in the engineers' specifications. The fully adjustable upside-down fork from WP Suspension with diameter 50mm brings sufficient rigidity and provides a mounting for the 2nd brake. The 4-piston callipers of the R 1100 S BoxerCup Replica are fitted with adapters and grip the corresponding 320 mm diameter brake discs. They are activated with a 17mm radial pump from PHOENIX, which is matched by the 16mm radial clutch pump.

The rearward view is provided by mirrors with milled arms from AC Schnitzer.

To balance the front wheel guide, the rear spring strut is replaced by a fully adjustable WP Suspension spring strut with higher spring rate.

The HP2 now runs on V-Performance wheels by AC Schnitzer in sizes 3.5 & 5.5 x 17. Dunlop Sportmax GP Racer tyres in sizes 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17 provide the necessary grip.

Extra power was found in the exhaust system. The high performance manifold without catalyst by AC Schnitzer together with the AC Schnitzer titanium rear silencer brings the power to an impressive 111.3 HP at 7500 rpm. Without the dB killer, the power would be an awesome 112.5 HP. The torque is 120 Nm at 5550 rpm.

After the extensive conversion, the ready-to-ride weight is 190 kg, with the axle distribution precisely 50% front and rear.

For design reasons, in pure Superbike mode a Boxer Enduro is naturally at a slight disadvantage in comparison with a specifically designed machine with a different engine concept. But the AC Schnitzer HP2 handles as well as a Go-Kart on tight corners. There it reveals potential of a level previously reserved for competition. The powerful engine, excellent suspension by WP Suspension and grippy Dunlop tyres provide pure riding pleasure at the highest level.

The AC Schnitzer HP2 is only available as a Concept Bike in this form. At present a conversion kit is being tested for use on public roads. This will consist of the V-Performance wheels size 17", a second brake with adapter for the standard fork, the characteristic AC Schnitzer rear silencer and the high performance manifold.

The team's 2008 calendar also features selected rounds of the inaugural Dakar Series, the FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup and the FIA international Cup for Cross-Country Bajas with the tried and tested Pajero/Montero Evolution.
In parallel to its competition activities, Team Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart is also furthering the development of the new "Racing Lancer" with the clear objective of winning the Dakar in 2009.
As officially revealed, the team's latest cross-country rally car will be powered by a new turbocharged diesel engine which has already been put through its paces in a specific version of the Pajero/Montero Evolution on the following races: the Central Europe Rally (the first event of the newly-created Dakar Series), the Rali Transiberico (second round of FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup) and the Baja Espana (round three of the FIA International Cup for Cross-Country Bajas).
Competing at rally speeds against the sport's leading teams has enabled the team to gather a vast amount of valuable data which could not have been obtained through testing alone. Hiroshi Masuoka (Japan) has competed twice with the turbocharged Pajero/Montero Evolution and is typically enthusiastic about the newcomer's potential: "The diesel version is overwhelmingly easy to drive thanks to its tremendous torque which is available over an even broader rev-band," says Masuoka. "It outperforms the petrol-powered car in terms of controllability over challenging terrain, as well as when accelerating out of corners and along high-speed straights. With the right set-up it would be comfortably faster."
Joan 'Nani' Roma (Spain) drove a Pajero/Montero Evolution, with the new turbodiesel grafted into it, on the Rali Transiberico. He reported that he had to adapt his driving style to the new engine's torque characteristics. Roma succeeded in posting three fastest stage times on the Portuguese event and actually led at one point, speaking volumes for the potential of the new engine.
This experimental car covered more than 8,000km in testing and competition, and the engineers in charge of the program have profited from this opportunity to develop a new suspension geometry designed to cope with the different weight distribution and torque characteristics associated with the new turbocharged diesel engine. They have also worked on a new engine compartment layout which is aimed at ensuring better cooling for the engine and auxiliary components. Technical improvements to the turbocharger have produced improved response at low revs, as well as more power at high engine speeds, while reliability has also been enhanced.
The "Racing Lancer" took part in two one-week test sessions in Spain and Morocco towards the end of June following its unveiling earlier in the month. With the basic performance package now confirmed and initial teething problems cured, the team is taking advantage of the considerable experience obtained with the Pajero/Montero Evolution to accelerate the new vehicle's development.
Continuing the build-up to the 2009 Dakar, the team has entered three petrol versions of the Pajero/Montero Evolution for Portugal's PAX Rally, the second event of the newly-created Dakar Series (Tuesday September 9 - Sunday September 14). The three cars will be driven by Stéphane Peterhansel (France), Luc Alphand (France), and Joan "Nani" Roma (Spain). The outing will enable the team to carry out work on the suspension and tires which will be carried over to the Racing Lancer.
The Racing Lancer itself will undergo further testing in Morocco between the end of August and the beginning of September, as well as over the latter part of October. Each test will last approximately two weeks and the car will cover some 4,000km each time. Following its extensive development program, the Racing Lancer will make its official debut on the Baja Portalegre / Portugal, round six of the 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup (Thursday October 30 - Sunday November 2). The car will be in the hands of Stéphane Peterhansel, the Dakar's most successful competitor with a total of nine outright wins - on two and four wheels - under his belt.

The powerplant is also the most powerful motor in the Ecotec family. Gasoline direct injection technology helps the engine produce more power while maintaining the lower fuel consumption of a small displacement port-injected engine. With direct injection, fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber to create a more complete burn of the air/fuel mixture. Less fuel is required to produce the equivalent horsepower.
In addition to more power, the car's chassis has been tuned for better handling and its braking system has been upgraded for quicker stopping. Other technical highlights include a torque-sensing limited-slip differential and StabiliTrak electronic stability control. Like all Saturn Skys, the Red Line model boasts a near 50:50 weight distribution, independent front and rear suspension, an extremely stiff body, and coil-over Bilstein monotube shocks. The Red Line also features several unique interior and exterior differences compared to the Sky roadster, including dual exhaust with chrome polished outlets, 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, and a redesigned front apron with large vents and black headlamp bezels.
The interior features a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, unique seatback and floormat embroidery, metallic sill plates, stainless steel pedal covers, Red Line-specific gauges and a digital boost gauge included in the Driver Information Center .
The Sky Red Line has a handful safety features, including dual-stage front air bags, four-wheel disc brakes with standard ABS, side-impact door beams, GM's Passenger Sensing System, and three-point safety belts with pretentioners and load-limiting retractors.

Rinspeed will unveil its iChange concept at this year’s Geneva Motor show and has released a series of images in anticipation of the upcoming Geneva show.

The iChange will feature a 175 horsepower electric motor, which isn’t really anything new on the concept or production front, but that’s not what sets the iChange apart from other vehicles. The iChange will also have a healthy dose of sport to go along with its practicality, with the concept theoretically making the spring to 60 in just over four seconds, on its way to a top speed of 137 mph.

According to Rinspeed, the iChange will feature a unique and fluid “1-2-3” seat layout. When only the driver is aboard, the iChange takes the form of a tear drop, but when more passenger space is needed, the car’s “electronic trick-tail” opens up to offer enough space for two more occupants.The Swiss auto powerhouse Rinspeed presents the ‘iChange,' the world's first car whose body adapts to the number of passengers on board. For Rinspeed boss Rinderknecht the vehicle is more than just a clever concept car. “The „iChange“ is a symbol for the fundamental changes the auto industry undergoes worldwide. And it is clear that only those companies will survive that have innovative answers for the demands of a new automotive era.” The visionary Rinderknecht is convinced that the days of gas-guzzling behemoths are coming to an end: “The „iChange“ is a signal for the coming global changes to individual mobility. We need to be ready to meet these challenges with new ideas.”
In seconds a streamlined one-seater sports car transforms into a comfortable car with ample room for three. The trick: At the push of a button the rear end of the teardrop-shaped car magically pops up. “We have designed and built an extremely flexible vehicle. In it we have brought the themes of versatility and continually changing energy demands to their logical conclusions.” The result is a streamlined, lightweight zero-emission car with dramatically reduced energy consumption. The basic idea behind the ‘iChange:': The energy demand of a vehicle depends mostly on its weight, the type of engine it uses, and its aerodynamic properties. The engineering-services company Esoro that traditionally builds Rinspeed concept cars has built an extremely lightweight car weighing in at only 1'050 kilograms. To power the car, the Swiss specialists chose an electric motor. The idea of the pop-up rear end was conceived to account for the sizeable effect aerodynamics play in fuel consumption.
While other cars always have to ferry around their puffed-up exteriors that can accommodate up to seven passengers even if they're just transporting a single soul, the „iChange“ features an adaptive body. The sole driver is conveyed in a teardrop-shaped car that offers optimal aerodynamic properties and thus minimized energy consumption. If more than one person need to be transported the expanding rear provides room for two passengers. As a result of the increased weight and no longer optimal aerodynamics the energy consumption increases - but only for the time passengers are actually on board.
The energy for the electric motor comes from lithium-ion batteries that are available in two different stack configurations for short- and long-distance driving. The electric motor of the „iChange“ produces 150kW, capable of propelling the car to a top speed of 220 km/h. The sprint from rest to 100 km/h takes just slightly over four seconds. This impressive performance is made possible with the help of a six-speed pre-selector gearbox from the Subaru WRX car. The central research department of Siemens AG (Corporate Technology, CT) supplied the integration technology for engine/generator, electronics and battery connection interface. Siemens has long been one of the world leaders for energy systems and eco technology with pioneering concepts for electric drive systems. Its products cover the entire electric value-added chain from generation to distribution to consumption. The gearbox and drivetrain are lubricated with eco-friendly lubricants from Motorex. Custom-made lightweight 17” and 18” forged wheels with aerodynamic shrouds are supplied by light-alloy wheel specialists AEZ. Pirelli P Zero tires in size 215/40-17 in front and size 245/40-18 in back provide optimal grip.

Luton – Since the Insignia hit UK showrooms at the start of 2009 it has been a resounding sales success for Vauxhall, with more than 55,000 cars sold in the last 18 months. Premium design cues, the choice of all-wheel-drive models and a raft of new technology in its sector has elevated its appeal to not only fleet customers, but also to retail buyers, who now account for 35 per cent of all sales – a 16 per cent improvement over the Vectra.

There has also been a significant increase in the number of upper-trim Insignias sold, such as the SRi, SE and Elite models (over 60 per cent) supporting the fact that Vauxhall is now seen as a viable alternative to more traditional premium cars in the mid-size sector, albeit at a lower price point.And with some 40 awards now behind it – including the coveted European Car of the Year 2009 – it’s no surprise that UK buyers made it the best-selling mid-size car soon after its launch in what is Europe’s biggest single market for Insignia. But we weren’t alone: the Insignia has also become the best-selling or second-best selling mid-size car in 10 other European markets too.

To further boost the Insignia’s competitive position, Vauxhall has now combined the Insignia’s Adaptive 4x4 system, which was previously only available with the 2.0- and 2.8-litre petrol engines, with the 2.0-litre 160PS CDTi diesel engine. A rare combination in this market sector, the Insignia CDTi 4x4 hits British showrooms in September this year and will build Vauxhall’s reputation for technological innovation still further.        The Adaptive 4x4 all-wheel drive system, together with the adaptive FlexRidechassis and the electronically controlled rear limited slip differential (eLSD), sets new standards for driving and handling. Three decades ago James Bond (then enacted by British star Roger Moore) wowed the world with a car that could 'fly' under water in the movie The Spy Who Loved Me. Only, it was animation and not an actual scene. But Frank M Rinderknecht, the 52-year-old automobile visionary and boss of Swiss automaker Rinspeed, has turned a dream into reality with his 'sQuba.' Rinspeed sQuba is the most exciting thing at this year's Geneva Motor Show and is creating many a ripple. sQuba is the world's first real submersible car that can 'move like a fish underwater'. It can dive up to 32.8 feet (10 mt) below the surface of the water and can move at a sedate 1.8 miles per hour.
The sQuba has an open cockpit for 'safety reasons' (so that people can get out easily anytime in case of an emergency). The occupants of the car have to breathe compressed air through built-in scuba masks. sQuba is an electric car that uses rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and 3 electric motors for propulsion. It is a zero-emission car as documented by the rotating license plate in the rear. It produces no exhaust emissions.The 'sQuba's' filling station is the water reservoir.? It is no surprise that the vehicle features powerful yet energy-saving LED lighting technology.
The first car that could drive underwater was Quandt's Amphibicar, built in 1968. Only 3,878 were produced but many are still being driven on roads. Then Gibbs Technologies came up with Gibbs Aquada in 2004 which Virgin boss Richard Branson used to break the speed record for crossing the English Channel . However, the sQuba seems to be the most exciting of them all.
To drive on the roads, the sQuba 'relies on a stainless coil-over suspension from KW automotive and large Pirelli tires mounted on custom-made forged light-weight wheels from AEZ with 17- and 18-inch diameters.'

Pininfarina unveils the Nido EV, the first running prototype of the “Nido Development Programme”, the project for an electric car conceived, designed and built entirely by the Pininfarina Style and Engineering Centre of Cambiano (Turin).During the energy crisis of the 1970s, for example, the industry concentrated on aerodynamics and alternative sources of energy to reduce petrol consumption. Pininfarina replied by developing the CNR Energetica 1 prototype, with ideal aerodynamic bodywork. Those years also produced the Ecos, the first electric car developed by Pininfarina, underlining that it was on the cutting edge in an area that the motor industry had only begun to reassess recently. In the 1980s, Pininfarina research into the application of light materials resulted in the Audi Quartz and Lancia Hit prototypes, which explored the use of new and lighter metallic and compound materials.

The 1990s brought greater understanding of environmental problems, more research in the field of recyclable materials and ergonomics, and a more efficient concept of how to “package” the vehicle. Pininfarina offered new solutions with the Ethos macro-project, a family of 3 cars with an aluminium chassis, recyclable resin bodywork and an innovative combustion engine with reduced emissions, building up to the Ethos 3EV in 1995, another zero emissions car. More recently, Pininfarina has focused its research on hybrid vehicles, with the Eta Beta and Metrocubo projects, two small cars with modular cabins that also tackle the problems of driving in town and on medium hauls. Then, in 2004, Pininfarina returned to the issue of safety, which it had touched on with the Sigma, Alfa Romeo P33 and Sigma Grand Prix prototypes, and in 2008 it proposed the Sintesi, a futuristic concept car powered by 4 fuel cells (one per wheel).

Today, with the new global crisis and the need to curb emissions and consumption, the opportunities offered by zero emissions urban mobility have grown significantly: the world is increasingly aware of the environment, and Pininfarina was the first industrial company in Italy, and one of the first in Europe, to propose a project for a 100% electric car, the BlueCar, developed jointly with the Bolloré company. Today, when all the large carmakers view the electric car as an opportunity, Pininfarina takes another step forward, promoting a new philosophy that incorporates the choice of individual and collective electric transport in the context of a new lifestyle that everyone should adopt in order to increase energy saving, and protect the planet. The car has been designed, engineered and built entirely by Pininfarina, bringing to life something that, just a few months earlier, The Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina photographed in the garden of Pininfarina at Cambiano (Turin) was just a dream and creating a sort of symbiosis between the customer and Pininfarina along the path leading to definition of this extraordinary model.Starting from a Ferrari Enzo, the aim was to produce a unique vehicle inspired by sport racing cars with extreme vocations: not just a show-car but a vehicle to be enjoyed on the road.After freezing styling with various touch-ups to the initial sketches, the surfaces were defined using CAS modeling, then moving on to actual construction and assembly.
More than 200 components were specifically developed through constant interaction between styling and design: from the bixenon lighting clusters specifically designed with an innovative system of yellow and white leds to the alloy wheels – 20-inch aluminum – milled from the block, up to and including the aluminum and special steel in-sight hinges.The sleek lines of the vehicle, characterized by a soft muscular touch, took shape on the body – made entirely of carbon fiber. 18-inch wheels with 245/40-series tires, the Audi magnetic ride adaptive shock absorber system, the Sport button and a powerful brake system with four internally ventilated discs make the Audi TTS extremely dynamic. The body, which has been lowered 10 millimeters (0.39 in) versus the volume model, was given a series of design updates. The most striking of these are the single-frame grille with its aluminum-look horizontal double bars and the bumper.

Engines:
Audi offers a choice of three four-cylinder engines with turbocharging and direct fuel injection for both the TT Coupé and the TT Roadster. The two TFSI gasoline engines and the TDI combine sporty performance with groundbreaking efficiency - their fuel consumption figures have been reduced by up to 14 percent. All three engines work with a recuperation system that recovers energy during braking and coasting phases and stores it temporarily in the battery.

The 2.0 TDI:
Smart power, superior cultivation and groundbreaking efficiency: The Audi TT and the TT Roadster are powered by a highly efficient diesel engine. The 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp) is now available in a new, intensively updated version.
In the TT Coupé, the two-liter, four-cylinder engine consumes just 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (44.38 US mpg), which corresponds to only 139 grams of CO2/km (223.70 g/mile). With 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque - the latter available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm - the standard sprint takes 7.5 seconds and acceleration doesn't end until a top speed of 226 km/h (140.43 mph) is reached. India Gunship HAL LCH Light Combat Helicopter - First Flight

HAL has performed the maiden flight of its indigenously designed & developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH). The first Technology Demonstrator (TD-1) of the LCH flew the 20 minute flight from HAL's Helicopter Complex, Bangalore on 29th March 2010. This flight provided an opportunity to carry out low speed, low altitude checks on the various systems on-board. The crew reported that the performance of the helicopter and systems was satisfactory.

Derived from the HAL Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), the new helicopter is a dedicated for attack missions, and, as such, is equipped with an enhanced weapon system, mission systems and crashworthy landing gear. The airframe is also enhanced with low-observable characteristics, primarily regarding the thermal signature. Design and development of the new platform continued at HAL in the last three years. The program is now entering the flight testing phase, expected to lead to initial operation clearance by December 2011, towards induction into Indian Armed Services.
The twin-engine LCH is a 5.5 ton class gunship, designed with an armored, tandem cockpit, equipped with advanced glass cockpit, helmet-mounted targeting systems and full day and night operational capability. The helicopter is powered by two Shakti engines, developing 900 kW (1200 hp) each, Developing a maximum air speed of 275 km/h. This engine was jointly developed by HAL and Turbomeca of France.
The armament suite comprises a combination of free-flight 60/68mm rockets, Mistral air-to-air missile, a nose mounted 20mm cannon from Nexter and a variety of air-to-ground ordnance including anti-tank/multi-purpose missiles, high explosive fragmentation bombs and anti-radiation missiles. It will be fitted with the Saab Aviatronics electronic counter-measures (ECM) suite for self defense.
Relying on its air-to-air and precision guided missiles ordnance, the new helicopter is slated for a variety of combat and combat support missions including anti-helicopter and anti-UAV air defense, Destruction of Enemy Air Defense (DEAD), and escort and support for Special Heliborne Operations (SHBO), as well as counter insurgency operations. The helicopter will be integrated with both Indian Army and Air Force units. HAL plans to sell at least 150 LCHs to the military services in India.
To support operations in high mountainous areas, the LCH is designed to take off, fully equipped from an altitude of 10,000 feet, and operate its weapons up to 16,300 feet. It will also be able to engage targets like UAVs that are flying at altitudes of up to 21,300 feet.

The Series opener is planned for April 2010.The GR8 concept rendering, which Chevron confirms is fairly close to the final design, reveals a discernable relationship to its illustrious predecessor, the Chevron B8, an enduring favourite with historic sporstcar competitors. Fabrication of the GR8 prototype is in progress and development testing is scheduled to commence in January.The new ompetition coupe will be powered by a Cosworth 2.0L YD race engine developing 255 bhp at 8200 rpm. The four cylinder unit has been chosen for its combination of lightness, durability and all-round economics. With a weight of around 600 kg, the GR8 will have a power to weight ratio in excess of 400 bhp per tonne.

Saab AeroX Concept

Saab Aero-X is a concept car by Saab unveiled at the 2006 Salon International de l'Auto. It is powered by a 2.8 L twin-turbocharged V6 running on pure ethanol that produces 300 kW (400 hp). 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is predicted to be 4.9 and top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). It has a 7-speed manual transmission controlled by paddles on the steering wheel.Like the Saab Turbo X, the Aero-X has four wheel drive. The doors and windscreen are connected, so instead of using conventional doors or even gullwing doors, it uses a cockpit canopy where the entire top section of the car is opened. This offered the Aero X's driver full 180 degree vision, and also facilitates entry and exit from its low-slung cabin. The body is made of carbon fiber. The suspension is electronically-controlled. Even though it is a compact two-seat sports car, it has reasonable storage, as the rear features two storage facilities, with a conventional hatchback and sliding drawer underneath.

The interior offers "clean Scandinavian interior design". The car has no ordinary dials and buttons; instead, data is displayed on acrylic 'clear zones' in graphic 3D images. All interior and exterior lights utilize LEDs.

The reasons: high fuel efficiency and extremely low emissions combined with maximum performance. It is precisely this formula that has already won over millions of car drivers worldwide, including a growing number of people in America.For 2009, Volkswagen is starting the new year by presenting an automotive dream -- an affordable, uncommonly economical and highly agile mid-engine roadster. Audi unveiled in Frankfurt the Audi S5 Sportback which will go on sale next spring. The Audi S5 Sportback is powered by a 3.0 FSI supercharged engine that develops 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) of torque between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. This engine takes the Audi S5 Sportback from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and up to a top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). The V6 engine of the Audi S5 Sportback is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.
